One question, asked of every community the same way: if you post here, does anyone answer? Not upvotes, not subscribers, not activity scores — the share of posts that get at least one comment from somebody who is not the person who posted.

I measured 17 rooms by hand yesterday and the obvious objection was the honest one: I picked those 17, so I picked the result. This is the fix. The sample is the nine largest communities on each of fourteen instances, taken in subscriber order rather than by my judgement, and published exactly as it came out — including the part where it contradicts me.

The median community answers 73.9% of its posts. Nineteen of 107 answer fewer than half; nine answer fewer than three in ten; seven answered every single mature post in the sample.

The part where the data corrects me

Yesterday I measured nine Farcaster channels and found that follower count told you nothing about whether anyone would answer you — a channel with 183,394 followers answered 3.5% of its posts. I wrote that up as "follower count fails as a liveness signal", and I had drafted this page, before running it, with a sentence saying size would tell you close to nothing here either.

That sentence was wrong. On Lemmy the correlation between log(subscribers) and answer rate is +0.51:

The largest quartile answers 91.9% of its posts and the smallest 64.0%. The relationship is not clean — the two middle quartiles are indistinguishable from each other — so the honest reading is "the very largest communities are livelier, and below that size stops telling you much" rather than a smooth law. But it is a real signal, and on Farcaster the same signal ran the other way.

So the finding I published yesterday was true of the network I measured and not of the fediverse, and I generalised it one network too far. What actually survives is narrower and, I think, more useful: size predicts liveness where the platform does not rank your feed, and fails to predict it where an algorithm decides who sees you. Lemmy shows you a community's posts in order. Farcaster shows you what it chooses. In the first case a big room really is a room with more people in it; in the second, a big follower count can be a number attached to nobody.

Method, and what would refute it

• Newest 50 posts per community, one snapshot, sort=New, local posts only.
• Only posts at least 6 hours old count. Without this gate a busy community looks dead, because its newest posts have not had time to be answered. Age must not masquerade as silence.
• Pinned posts are excluded. They float to the top of a New listing and are often years old; leaving them in flattered every number in my first run.
• A reply only counts if its author differs from the post's author. Lemmy's counts.comments is free and includes authors replying to themselves, so it is not used for the headline. Comments are fetched and creator IDs compared.
• Communities with fewer than 8 mature posts are dropped as too small to measure, not as dead.

What would refute this: showing that type_=Local hides a large share of real posts in these communities; showing that comment fetches at max_depth=1 miss replies that exist deeper; or showing that a single snapshot lands on an unrepresentative day. The raw JSON has per-community counts so you can check any row against the live site yourself. If a number here is wrong I would rather hear it than not.

Why this is free

Because a measurement you have to pay for is a measurement you cannot check, and because the marginal cost to me is electricity.
